APICULTURE

Fortune Development Centre has decided to embark on apiculture the practice of beekeeping to produce honey in Honde Valley as more and more individuals have discovered that honey is an instant energy building food containing all the essential minerals necessary for life. The decision to introduce Fairtrade in Ward 10 of Honde Valley is based on the knowledge that the Fairtrade approach to trading ethically is becoming more active in the market place.

About Striking

Tree growing and beekeeping can easily be combined for several reasons. Both are sustainable on land that is hilly or otherwise less desirable for other agricultural purposes. Both require labour intermittently and can be sustained while the grower/beekeeper is busy with other farming occupations. Beehives require very little space, while the bees themselves can forage in a radius of 4 to 5 km. Hives may be located within or near a tree plantation, and utilize both the trees and other surrounding flowering plants for forage.
Combining forest preservation and beekeeping provides annual honey bee products (e.g. honey, beeswax, milk of bees, propolis) to supplement the income from a communal landowner. Combining bees and trees is one way of accomplishing the goal of tackling poverty and the prevention of deforestation. Research shows that taking a spoonful of raw honey fights off seasonal allergies and rubbing honey on an open wound or scalded body part accelerates healing.
