About Us Who are we

Fortune Development Centre is a private voluntary organization (PVO) registered in both Zimbabwe and Sweden. As a none profit organization, it aims to alleviate extreme poverty among vulnerable children and the youth; improving their education in order to develop skills with special emphasis on artisan skills like information technology (ICT), carpentry, building, plumbing and mechanics so as to provide them with the essentials needed to achieve a better standard of living.

When Fortune DC arrived at Samaringa in 2014, the vision was to establish a complex with a toy manufacturing factory as the centerpiece for socio economic development in Ward 10 of Honde Valley. Construction of the factory is meant to transfer technology from Dalahösten of Sweden and to teach carpentry skills. This would cascade into employment creation for the local inhabitants.

There are also plans to construct a motor mechanic workshop adjacent to the factory so as to service and repair Fortune DC’s vehicles and those of the surrounding area. Consistent with Fortune DC’s goal, there are three objectives here: technology transfer, training in motor mechanic and job creation.

In the meantime, work would also be underway with the construction of a one-storey administration block. The principal objective is to create skilled leadership staff to cater for data processing and accounting systems that advance transparency and accountability to both Fortune DC’s Directorate and the Executive Board and the investor/donor organization, on the other hand.

The first floor would house admin staff while the ground floor would serve as the reception area, staff canteen and refreshment area for visitors. It would sound an over emphasis to again mention the tripod: Technology transfer to the village, skills training for the vast pool of school leavers and job creation to mitigate the effect of unemployment, mentioned to be over 85% in Zimbabwe and 81% in Ward 10; according to Fortune DC’s June 2016 statistics.

The need to help feed vulnerable children and other down trodden villagers brings in the idea of repackaging food left over in restaurants. The idea is to dispatch a vehicle to Mutare to collect food for repackaging and then to be distributed to the need.

A study of the area on Fortune DC’s location, revealed a need to harmonize the water resources distribution in Ward 10. The saying “No development without water” became a moto and slogan that lead to the creation of the Community Mobilization Leadership Team; an entity to spearhead development of the water resources infrastructure. This resonated positively within the Swedish Fortune DC Executive Directorate.

Networking and publicity led to a visit by science students from Stockholm and Barcelona sponsored by KIC InnoEnergy and supported by Sweco and SELECT. The scientific report, “Opportunities for Sustainable Community Development of Ward 10 in Honde Valley, June 2017” produced a popcorn effect that sparked a wider vision in the socio economic development. Out of a bag with several proposed projects, Water Resources Harmonization was prioritized and this has attracted Engineers Without Borders, Sweden into a partnership with Fortune DC.
